This is an odd book about a virtually unknown "little" campaign in the Guadalcanal section of the Pacific war that brilliantly displays the details and incidents and people involved, events we seldom think of as we often rely on an overview of the Big Picture but not the grimy harsh slogging details, the "little" battles that add up to the big wins and losses. Bravo for the author, it's good for readers, armchair warriors and even veterans. You will find, however, that it's odd in its unedited qualities that could disappoint a reader if he's looking for a polished big-publishing-house volume. This book jumps and halts, the prose is often choppy, but it's a short volume - 45 pages plus an additional 18 pages of appendices about two outstanding U.S. leaders, the enemy fortress at Rabaul, the problems with rain and insects, etc. - so the unevenness hardly matters. The maps are not as clear as they should be, but a widespread problem with histories (both military and social histories) is the absence of maps altogether, as if readers should know where Rabaul is or wherever the events take place -- or be punished for not knowing. It's very frustrating, are historians nuts, so blind they can't make a reasonable argument? At least this book has maps and the author considered his readers.
